In
1978 (at the Drupard Concert at IIT Delhi), a dream was realised
in the form of SPIC MACAY- Society for Promotion of Indian
Classical Music and Culture amongst youth. A non profit, voluntary,
NGO dedicated to promote awareness of Indian Culture in the youth
and to rekindle the dying flame of interest of the people in the
rich heritage of the country, who were being weaned away from it
by a steady diet of alien influences like rock and heavy metal music
and other baser influences.
Since the very beginning, Modern
School has played an integral part in the realisation of this dream. Modern
School has hosted a large number of Lec-Dems , Baithaks, workshops , fests and
camps and helped Spic Macay in its aim of popularizing Indian culture amongst
youth. Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ms Sonal Mansingh, Ms
Sitara Devi, The Vidali Brothers, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Birju Mahahraj and Uday
Bhalwalkar are amongst the eminent artists who have performed in School, over
the years. To celebrate 20 years of SPIC MACAY , the 5th Annual School
convention VIRAST was held at Modern School on the 3rd and 4th of May 1997.
Talks, plays and performances by various artists were held. A crafts exhibition
was also on display. The school has also organised a number of workshops
including a theatre workshop by Shri B. V. Karanth which culminated in the
putting up of Tagore's play "Tashon Ka Desh" or Land of Cards.
Needless to say, one of the performances was also held at Modern School.
SPIC MACAY has always tried its
best to infuse in the the youth , respect for their own cultural hertage. It has
been successful to a very large extent, at least with the students of
Modern School. The Lec- Dems and talks have helped the students tremendously in
bettening their understanding of Indian culture. The artists ,often employed
means that students would find easy to relate to. In her Lec - Dem ,Sonal
Mansingh called the members of the football team up on stage and illustrated the
similarities between Bharatnatyum and football ! Often students were initially
apprehensive about how the music or dance poerformance would be. But eventually,
found themselves wondering at the awesome richness of their cultural heritage.
All in all Modern School and SPIC MACAY together have helped the youth in
raining an insight towards their cultural traditions and culture.
The SPIC MACAY Board of our school consists of:
